The Time of our Arising
Me too, me too, me three, me four
Facebook feeds are saturated with the voices of the aggravated
Women all around the world, joining together with their banner unfurled
“This happened to me, it happens everyday, we are abused, harassed, assaulted in every possible way”
How can it be that it took so long for women to finally sing their song
of their daily experiences of unwanted touch, of being leered at, jeered at, groped in the crutch?
How can it be that in 2017, these abuses pass as simply routine?
I’ll you why and it’s shockingly clear- these women’s voices were buried in fear.
Fear of being judged as the girl who enticed, with her clothes and her looks, her sugar and spice
or fear of being the difficult one who all in the future will probably shun
So with the fear of speaking out and drawing attention silence becomes the safest convention.
For don’t you see we can never win
in the game of patriarchy we are the original sin.
And yes I know that men are also in pain,
by the toxic masculinity that has us in chains
But just for now can we please spend some time by acknowledging this millennial year crime
of venerating values of violence and power, of believing it’s great to make others cower
that being a man confers invincible rights and being a “real man” means you bully and fight
of simply believing that men are superior, that women by default are of course their inferiors
there’s no denying these beliefs hold sway- look at who’s in charge of the US of A
But the saddest part of all of this tale is how so many women simply swallow it wholesale
Believing that our only worth is the size of our breasts or the lack of our girth
that we must at all times be nice and sweet, for aren’t we all just disposable meat?
And maybe this too kept our voices silent- this “knowing our place” when men turned violent
But no more silence, our voices shout out, we’re no longer afraid, together we’ve got clout
Together we can change the story, rise up as women in all our glory
We now understand that me and me and me and me, is the force to change our destiny
We’re no longer alone, a band of sisters and we’re declaring our story to all of our misters.
We are a force proclaiming enough of subjugation and of shaming
Now is the time of our arising- the feminine forces energising
It’s not just in women, men feel it too-
Watch out patriarchy- we’re coming for you.
